Studying in China

The student visa, the documents required by the Chinese embassy in Cameroon and the HSK Chinese exam.

Two visas

X1 or X2?

X1 visa: over 180 days
For a long program. You need the admission notice, the “Visa Application for Study in China” form (JW201 or JW202), a medical certificate and proof of funds. Fingerprints are mandatory.
X2 visa: 180 days or less
For a short study stay. You need the admission letter, a medical certificate and proof of funds; the JW201 or JW202 form is not required.

Key points

Medical certificate
Less than 6 months old, issued by the Chinese medical team in Cameroon.
Funds to prove
If you pay yourself: a bank domiciliation certificate and the last 3 months of statements with a balance of over XAF 3 million, or your last 3 months of pay slips. If a relative pays: their letter of support and proof of the family relationship.
On arrival in China
With an X1 visa, you must apply for a residence permit within 30 days, at the public security exit-entry office where you live.

The type of entry, and so the exact price of an X1 or X2 visa, is not specified by the embassy: confirm it when you submit.

The HSK Chinese exam

The HSK is the official proof of Chinese level for admission, a degree or a scholarship in China.

New version
The HSK moves from 6 to 9 levels (HSK 3.0), launched worldwide on 13 December 2026.
Validity
Results are valid for 2 years from the exam date.
Required level (example)
For a 2026 scholarship at Beijing Language and Culture University: HSK 4 for a master's or doctorate taught in Chinese. For a bachelor's, a preparatory Chinese year can be added. Each university sets its own requirements.
Taking the HSK in Cameroon
The only official centre is the Confucius Institute of the University of Yaoundé II, Soa campus (HSK, HSKK, YCT, on paper or computer).
English-taught programs
Many universities also offer English-taught programs: the English level is then required instead.
